RUMOR: NethrerRealm Studios Making a Marvel Fighting Game?

0

NetherRealm Studios, a Chicago based Video Game Company formerly known as Midway Games before being acquired by Warner Bros., has been making some of the most popular fighting games in recent history with 2011’s Mortal Kombat Reboot, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, 2013’s DC based fighting game “Injustice; Gods Among Us”, 2015’s “Mortal Kombat X”, 2017’s “Injustice 2” and the 2019 game “Mortal 11 Kombat”.

In 2021 it was expected for there to be a new game by the studio as for almost a decade there has been a tradition of releasing a game every two years, but with the 2020 Global Pandemic and the now canceled sale of WB Games that AT&T was planning to make that tradition has now been retired.

Many speculated that they would possibly make a new IP, something other than a fighting game, or perhaps that rumored horror-themed fighting game that Creative Director Ed Boon wanted to make with various 1980s slasher villains. But a recent report has made the fighting game community turn into a frenzy.

A recent report from an often reliable source has stated that NetherRealm Studios is working on a new Marvel Themed fighting game for Xbox Series X/S and Playstation 5 with a possible 2022/2023 Release Date. Many outlets picked up on the report and even well known Fighting Game YouTuber Maximilian Dood Gave His Thoughts on the situation, saying that he believes it is a Marvel vs. DC Fighting Game in the style of the Injustice Series that NetherRealm is known for.

Not much information is known about the report, but some say to wait until either the All Digital E3 2021 event in June or The Game Awards 2021 in December. If this rumor is true we have three possibilities…

  1. A Standalone Marvel Fighting Game
  2. A Marvel vs. DC fighting game, or…
  3. A Mortal Kombat vs. Marvel Universe Fighting Game

We’ll just have to wait and see what comes of this report later this year.
